Instead of heading to Galilee, they only went as far as the wilderness east of the Jordan River where John had been baptizing. In the tenth chapter in the Gospel According to John, Jesus had left Jerusalem after another run-in with the Jewish religious authorities.

The Jews seek to stone Jesus but are unable to arrest him. When the religious leaders continue to press Jesus about whether he’s the Christ (the Messiah), he announces: “I and the Father are one.” This appears to be blasphemy. The sheer number of moving parts-sheepfold, door, thieves and robbers, shepherd, sheep, gatekeeper, stranger, and hireling-make interpretation challenging and lead to strong differences of opinion among the Jews. Like all of Jesus’ parables-a literary form that the Evangelist generally avoids in the Fourth Gospel -the meaning appears obvious but close examination shows that Jesus has something far more complex in mind.
